SESSION: The Leap: How To Survive & Thrive in the Sustainable Economy

Chris Turner is an author, speaker and strategist, providing Canada’s authoritative voice on sustainability and the global cleantech boom. A National Business Book Award finalist for The Leap (which the Globe and Mail called “one of the most arresting arguments for building a green economy yet in print“) and The Geography of Hope, he is also the author of international bestseller Planet Simpson. His latest book, The War on Science, has been heralded as “required reading for all Canadians.” Turner's magazine writing has appeared in Fast Company, Time, The Globe and Mail, The Walrus, Canadian Geographic, and other leading national and international publications, earning nine National Magazine Awards and inclusion in four of the past five instalments of the Best Canadian Essays series. A collection of his essays and reporting on how change happens, How To Breathe Underwater, will be published this fall.

As the Green Party candidate in the 2012 Calgary Centre byelection, Turner’s passion, platform and dynamism earned him the best result ever by a Green candidate in Alberta. He was a 2013 writer-in-residence at Berton House in Dawson City, Yukon, and a 2010 Fleck Fellow at the Banff Centre. He has been named one of Alberta Venture's "Next 10" Most Influential Albertans, and in 2009 he co-founded CivicCamp, an influential grassroots civic engagement group.

When not writing or consulting, Turner enjoys life in Calgary, Alberta, with his wife and two children.

Turner was a featured speaker at the 2008 Alfred Deakin Innovation Lectures in Melbourne, Australia, and a 2010 Fleck Fellow at the Banff Centre. His narrated visual tour of The Geography of Hope has captivated audiences across Canada, ranging from Environmental Defence summits to Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers galas.

Turner's magazine writing has earned him seven Canadian National Magazine Awards, including the 2001 President's Medal for General Excellence (the highest honour in Canadian magazine writing). His writing and reporting on culture, technology and the environment have also appeared in Fast Company, The Globe & Mail, The Walrus, Time Magazine, Maclean's, Canadian Geographic, The Walrus, Azure and Utne Reader.
